The Johnny Moustache story

Johnny Moustache is a family run business, run by me, Sophie, and my partner Tim, with a little help from our seven year old daughter Poppy!

I am a self confessed furniture geek with a lifelong obsession for furniture design and textiles - with a particular soft spot for mid century style, as you can probably tell.

Since my mid teens I would...much to my parents delight, rescue, bring home, and restore old furniture, which saw me fishing around in skips (mainly around the back of Cambridge university!) and charity shops to find those pieces that I thought deserved another chance to sing.

After a move to Leeds, I went on to study furniture restoration at the Leeds college of Art and Design, and have never looked back!

Now based in the historically rich town of Stockton on Tees, which has seen the birth of the railways, the friction match, and Thomas Sheraton. I love living in the North East, as I have the seaside 15 minutes away from home, and the rolling countryside just a few minutes down the road...a truly inspirational place to live, work, and get creative!

8 years on, and the story continues.......

Our Vintage Finds

Vintage and antique furniture was my first passion. The satisfaction of finding an item and making it good again is something that I find totally compelling, and something I never tire of, with each piece representing a new challenge, teamed with the excitment I know I will get from beholding the finished article.

I have been reviving vintage items for many years now and have obtained a weath of knowledge and experience in doing so, and there is always something new to learn.

I believe that sympathetic restoration for a vintage item is always the best approach, and where fabrics and upholstery are concerned, the importance of meeting current fire regulations is key, so we have to achieve the right balance between respecting the individual style of each piece, whilst embracing the modern necessities.

One thing that always strikes me about the furniture I buy to restore is how well it is built, which is such a joy when renovating something, as I know it will be worth it because the quality is there to begin with.

Over the years we have bought and restored some amazing furniture by many well known (and lesser known) British and continental furniture manufacturers;

Ercol, G plan, Parker Knoll, McIntosh, France and sons, Dyrlund, Merrow associates, Alfred Cox, Gordon Russell, Stag, Walter Knoll, Vanson, Cintique, plus our lovely cocktail chairs.

We hold a large variety of vintage stock in our warehouse, much of which doesn't reach the 'vintage furniture' section on our website, so it's worth asking if you are looking for something in particular as we may have it in stock.

Our contemporary range - proudly made in Britain!

It seemed like a natural progression, after spending so many years working with vintage furniture, to want to make a new furniture range...so that's what wev'e done!

Our contemporary range of sofas, chairs and tables are locally produced right here in the North East of England, plus nothing is mass produced. Each leg is hand turned, and all of our chairs and sofas are hand made by a member of our team.

This was important, as having worked with much older, and very well contructed furniture, it really does set the benchmark for when making something that's brand new.

Using local craftsmen makes perfect sense on so many different levels, but the best thing for me is that we have the benefit of regularly visiting the workshop, getting to know everyone and building good relationships...which is exactly what has happened.

Our contemporary ranges reflect our genuine love for mid century and classic design, and is combined with our total committment to produce high quality furniture which is built to last.

How things are made and the guys who make it happen

We work with a great team of local time served craftsmen, who put many years of combined experience and expertise into each and every one of our items. We work alongside our team to make make sure the end result on every piece is just right, so all you need to do is sit back and enjoy once the hard work has been done.

Our team includes frame makers, upholsterers, cabinet makers, wood turners, seamstresses and (for our vintage items) restorers, using the best quality materials, each piece being uniquely built to the highest standard, using only sustainable solid timbers and the highest quality foams and fabrics.

We provide a large range of fabrics to choose from on our fabric selector which is found on all of our contemporary furniture pages, but also have much more to choose from if you are looking for something more specific.

Fabric swatches for our vintage furniture are available upon request, and I will personally choose a selection for you based on the types of fabrics and colors you are interested in - you are also of course more than welcome to supply your own fabric if preferred.
